Seasonal pet care checklist for spring and summer

Warm weather changes when pets exercise, where they rest, and what they encounter outside. A spring and summer check should prepare your normal routine for heat, open windows, yard work, and busier travel plans. Start before the first uncomfortable day, while you still have time to adjust equipment and schedules.
Consider the individual animal. A young, energetic dog and an older dog with health limitations may need very different versions of the same afternoon.
Move activity into comfortable conditions
Choose cooler parts of the day for walks when temperatures rise, and shorten or cancel strenuous activity when conditions are unsuitable. Check the walking surface and select shaded or grassy routes when appropriate. A familiar route can become uncomfortable as pavement heats up.
Carry water and offer breaks. Do not use a dog's willingness to chase a ball as proof that continuing is safe. Excitement can keep an animal moving when it needs rest.
AAHA's heatstroke guidance identifies excessive panting, weakness, and disorientation among concerning signs. Stop the activity and contact an emergency veterinarian immediately if heat illness is suspected; do not wait for every sign or attempt a temperature-based diagnosis at home. Never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle while you complete an errand.
Refresh outdoor boundaries
Inspect fences, gate latches, and gaps exposed by winter weather or yard work. Check again after contractors or visitors use the yard. A gate that usually closes by itself may be propped open during a delivery.
Provide access to shade and fresh water, while remembering that shade changes position throughout the day. Outdoor time should be supervised and appropriate to the weather; a bowl and tree do not make every hot afternoon suitable.
Inspect window openings before leaving them accessible. Screens must fit securely and remain intact; a tilted or loosely installed panel can defeat the arrangement. If containment is uncertain, close the window and use another way to ventilate. Position a perch where a jump will not land against a questionable screen, with a stable route down and somewhere away from direct sun.
Review seasonal exposures
Discuss parasite prevention with your veterinarian based on your location, travel, and pet. Keep products species-appropriate and follow the prescribed or labeled instructions. Do not assume a product used safely on one animal can be shared with another.
Store fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals, and gardening supplies securely. Follow application and reentry directions before allowing animals into treated areas. Remove packaging and tools after work instead of leaving them beside the patio.
Check the yard for unfamiliar plants, mushrooms, and debris. Prevent access to uncertain items while you identify them through a reliable source.
Prepare for the busier calendar
Plan care before outdoor events, vacations, and long day trips. Fireworks, visitors, and neighborhood activity can change the noise level at home, so maintain a quiet retreat and secure exits. Update identification and caregiver instructions before travel.
Wash travel bowls and inspect leashes, harnesses, and carriers before they are needed. Pack water and a practical cleanup towel for ordinary outings, and avoid leaving food or medication in a hot vehicle.
Indoors, offer comfortable resting spots away from the hottest windows. Check water more often during warm periods and clean bowls thoroughly. Notice changes in appetite, energy, or breathing and contact your veterinarian when concerned. Seasonal care works best as a few timely adjustments to daily habits: a different walk time, a checked gate, a cool resting place, and a plan that lets your pet stay comfortable while the household enjoys the season.
